Some colleges and universities have developed an aura of respectability (or conceitedness), a halo of superiority, and a sense of academic distinctiveness. Because of these, some institutions are glamorized and being put on the pedestal. This academic status (or halo) may be the result of long tradition, difficulty of entrance examination, long waiting list of candidates for admission, or it could be just all about a neatly woven propaganda. Attempts to rate (or advertise) universities according to certain predetermined elements are, in many ways, helpful. But those ratings (or advertisements) undeniably do not take into account other elements that are of greater importnace— the quality of unstruction, the personal influence of the faculty on the students, and the atmosphere of the institution itself.

To a large extent, institutions differ in real effectiveness of instruction, and there are some that possess a high prestige and merit it, while some are simply tagged as “lesser fancied school”. Leaders in all walks of life are by no means confined to being graduates of those so-called “high-ranking” schools. Undeniably, much depends upon what a student brings with himself, and being a graduate of such institutions guarantees nothing in the way of learning and success. After all, life is more than just about schools.

I am from New Era University. I am not from any of those “top” schools; but I’ve learned what I’m supposed to learn.

This statistics is a result of the study conducted by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), based on the average passing in the BOARD EXAMINATIONS OF ALL COURSES of all universities and colleges in the Philippines . This study is concluded every 10 years.

  1. thanks then.

  2. Thanks for what?

  3. newera? says:

wala pang napoproduce ang new era na matinong tao. puro incomplete. Never-heard school yan so what do you expect???

  4. As an institution, New Era University is still on its inception. It is then unfair to presume what this university can contribute to the society in the long run. I am not glorifying NEU. I just do not want to tolerate hasty generalizations.

    Thanks for the comment, though.

  5. NEU belongs to “others”. nuff said.

what you are doing is a product of pure bitterness dude. I suggest you do something worthwhile rather than bashing surveys that dont include NEU as one of the top schools.

nag upcat ka? tapos di ka pumasa? =)

  6. It is not bitterness. It’s argument.

  7. you sound bitter.
there are fucktards from those universities in that list
and there are also fucktards from yours
    and everywhere.
    yung gusto matuto, umaasenso,

  8. I am not bitter. I’m just trying to drive home my point. If you’re sick of my topics then why do you visit my site?

  9. And what point is that? Granted that people who graduated from the “top” universities sometimes have a superiority complex but bashing them and their respective schools isn’t going to change anything. What you can do is to make good in whatever profession it is you’re in and prove that you can hold your own with anyone, anywhere. And while you’re at it, find another cause to fight for because the point you’re pushing for is just plain silly.

  10. I agree that it is not about the school; it lies more on the students themselves. And that’s the point I’m trying to emphasize. It may be plain silly, but don’t get me wrong. I am not playing the role of an advocate for equality-among-schools. I just thought that it would be a good entry for my blog.

  11. bitterka=) says:

Yes, it does lie more on the students. But did you ever think about why those schools you mentioned are on the top. It IS because of their students. You might want to think hard about your ‘argument’ dude. Just accept that your school is not competent enough to be part of the pedestal that you are talking about.

  12. Thank you! Call me whatever you want… it won’t shatter my self-concept.

  13. hai naku.. school nanaman..
pero know wat den.. think about wat u said, how cud a school be in top if students are not that damn good?? ayt? hindi dahil sa sikat ang school kaya yan na ta-top.. 8′s because of da students. because of their willingness to be in top, hindi nla iniisip ang sarili nla…. iniisip dn nila ang school. dr not trying hard nt juz 4 dr self bt also 4 da whole. Kasalanan bang maging magaling? Bitter ka!

  14. I think otherwise.

  15. are you sure na nka pasok ang

  16. I got this from CHED. Blame them if you think Xavier University is not supposed to be part of the list.

  17. i’ve got 1 & 10 on my CV, aint bad…

  18. Bryan, even if you don’t have any of those on your CV, still it won’t be bad.

  19. cool USTE! :P hehehe

  20. What’s damn cool about UST?

  21. Dude, I hope you realize that, by posting this, you’ve just proclaimed your insecurity to everyone who can access the Internet. ^^

  22. @Dreizehn: Dude, I hope you realized that insecurity is such a lame argument against this post. Have you heard about ah hominem circumstancial?

  23. Oh, really? How so? Enlighten me. You see, I had no idea that straightforwardness was so lame-o.

In case you didn’t know, Mr. The-Top-Universities-Are-So-Conceited-And-Arrogant-So-I-Hate-Them!!!, saying that ‘being a graduate of such institutions guarantees nothing in the way of learning and success’ is horribly delusional. It matters A LOT if you’re an alumnus of a high-ranking university. Why do you think most UP graduates land the best jobs? IT’S BECAUSE THEY’RE FROM UP. Duh. You don’t need to be a frigging genius to get that. And saying that it all depends on what the students learn from school? PUH-LEEZ. That’s optimism bordering on absurdity. You won’t survive in the long run if you think that way. I’m not saying that the lessons we learn are unimportant and negligible, but right now, what matters most is EDUCATIONAL PRESTIGE. I’m cynical, yes, but at least I’m smart enough to know that where I graduate from is something very, VERY important to ensure success.

    Ta-ta.

  24. This post is not driven by resentment or insecurity. This was winnowed out from my own observation and opinion. I believe that, in essence, our collective perception of a certain institution (and its graduates) depends more upon the institution’s endowment more than anything else. Wealthy institutions can entice star faculty members, provide their faculty with state-of-the-art resources, have top-notch libraries, can equip their classrooms with high-tech audio-visual equipment and maintain small class sizes. It’s all because they have all of these great resources and so students flock to them. And so they have the luxury to get the pick of the litter. Well, it’s all about money, isn’t it? However, some students may manage to maximize their learning in spite of lack of endowment by their chosen institution. Yet, some fail to grasp this. Undeniably, graduates from lesser-fancied schools (like me) are being placed at a disadvantage because of those “biases”.

I think as a nation we should stop glorifying schools. Wouldn’t it be better if we judge graduates according to their own ability and not on one’s perceived-ability? Would it be better if we don’t allow stereotypes to cloud our judgments?

Yes, I am guilty of glorifying my own alma mater. But unlike you, I am not suffering from delusion that educational prestige matters the most. You may call me bitter or whatever. It’s not bitterness it a clamor for equality.

  25. how come the University of the Philippines Manila is only on the third spot?

I wrote this post not to just to earn hits or to attract comments. Hits and comments won’t feed my family! I wrote this post because it’s one way to deliver a simple message: We should discard perceived school differences. We should condemn school bias. We should promote equality among institutions. We should do these because learning is not measured on which school you came from.

Don’t blame me if I think this way; school bias still exists.

  28. nocountryfordiplomamills says:

But I like the status quo. There’s too many colleges in Metro Manila, so we must perpetuate the myth of the elites and the others. You exist so we can trample on your underprivileged faces. You exist so that we can feel good about ourselves.

If there’s something that really needs to be changed, it’s those diploma mills. They all ought to be closed. For good. Because in our country, higher education is a privilege, not a right. Deal with it.

  29. A great number of graduating high school students chose their university based not on “honorific school rankings” but rather from their own ideal academic geometry, it could be the location of the school itself, a convenient spot from their home, the tuition fee, or it could also be their religion, there a re countless other reasons. I can totally relate, for somehow it was exactly the same line of thinking that dictated which university I would have on my resume. I know some would blame me for my failure to recognize which school is “right” for me. And then the bursting of our own collective school pride comes quickly… But assholes, I am more than just a blogger who came from a never-heard school who’s pissed off because of your biases against a certain school! This post is more than just a display of bitterness!

I disagree with the idea that education is a privilege. This idea centers on “gross disparities” and imbalance among classes in a society. Being out of balance is what makes a person stupid, and our whole society is out of balance (on this context). The difference between the rich and poor had continually broadened because of this mentality. Lesser-fancied schools are more than just diploma factories. Those institutions have also made their own little share in educating the people. To underestimate their contributions is just an elevated form of elitism and superiority complex. I believe that education should not be in an ivory tower. Access to education should remain as a right.

Reading those silly arguments, it has just reinforced my own belief that there are rotten tomatoes in every school. The idea that some institutions have harvested all the best tomatoes is just a myth. If you think this argument is nothing but a ridiculous nightmare, I think so too.

I can’t blame you for favoring the status quo, it feeds your own delusions and conceitedness anyway.

  30. Its a sad truth but it is what it is.

Don’t blame the universities, don’t blame society for believing in it.

Think about it, if you were a businessman who takes no shit from anyone would you take a risk of hiring someone from a school whose faculty and facilities are not as they say “first class?”

I wouldn’t. In a capitalists’ world, work and money is not handed to those who cannot handle it or are not worth it. Equivalent exchange man, equivalent exchange.

They only make their decisions that way because a school’s reputation is kind of its word. An assurance that they won’t get incompetent employees.

I’m not saying that just because a school is not included in the “top” doesn’t mean that it is incapable of producing good employees . And you’re right, it doesn’t mean that just because you graduated from UP or any of the others they are better than anyone else.

But they did get in there and they did well enough to stay there and graduate. Because of that they are worth anyone’s time.

Its good that you love your alma mater.

Besides it that kind of thinking that actually creates this social stigma of some sort. If you just do your best and ignore those…then poof! no more of this shit.

  31. “Wealthy institutions can entice star faculty members, provide their faculty with state-of-the-art resources, have top-notch libraries, can equip their classrooms with high-tech audio-visual equipment and maintain small class sizes.”

Facilities matter. Theories are well and good pero what if andyan na ang real thing di ka makagalaw kasi di ka sanay?

Some of those schools that are not private utilize their superb faculty.

  32. nasa mangyan

  33. @jet what made you say that xavier is not a gud school? R u 100% sure? If I were u, i’d rather shut my mouth up coz u don’t know anything about that skul, even an inch. FYI, XU was the first ateneo skul that became a university. Xavier or let me say Jesuit skuls I beliv, have diffrent approach in promoting education which again I beliv far better than other skuls for god sake.Fyi, xavier is supporting ateneo de davao, ateneo de naga financially and sometimes provides monetary assistance sa ADMU. This goes to evryone, Let’s just stop giving selfish and unappropriate comments to other skuls coz basically no one is gaining from all those stuff. Why don’t we say something good about our own skuls, it might be beneficial for others-and hey,we’re living in the same country. MAGiS…

  34. third lang ang UP Manila? :|

  35. for someone stating your opinion, you’re very narrow and close-minded. there’s simply no point arguing with you. You’re arguments are irrelevant and foolish. Stop making schools fight, because that’s what you’re doing and you can’t deny it.

  36. To all UP students, whether you are from Manila, LB or other UP units: there’s no point arguing on which one of us is better. we all came from the same UP institution. I came from UPLB then transferred to Diliman and I feel that the subjects in UPLB are harder than my subjects in Diliman but there’s no need to argue which one is better. UP is UP kahit anong campus pa yan. what matters is we are still the best in the country, now we just have to live up to it after we graduate.

  37. @ m.d.c.

“You’re arguments are irrelevant and foolish. Stop making schools fight, because that’s what you’re doing and you can’t deny it.” I just hope you understand the difference between the words “you’re” and “your” and how each one is used. Nagke-claim ka pa namang magaling at bida. Kakahiya ka.

If you were only admitted to UP Los Banos, then you did not qualify in UP Diliman or UP Manila. So please put in mind that you were only admitted to UP de probinsya. Ang layo kaya ng Passing grade to qualify for admission ng UP Los Banos sa Manila at Diliman. Gising po. Kahit naman sa restaurants or fast foodd na may franchise or other branches, magkaiba pa din sila. Wake up dude.

  39. *Sigh* people really get into the kill zone when discussing schools. Guys, the author of this post is just trying to be objective, no need to cut him down to size with incessant bashing. Hmmmm I rarely am the pacifist.. Maybe because my school’s top8 that I’m kind of cool headed. Anyway, nice post, even if it gets some blood boiling.

  40. NEU sucks! End of discussion! :]

  41. @Igniter: You suck. Not worth of any discussion.

  42. @Den: Really? Well your face sucks! Your school is as repulsive as your appearance! Eeeeww! I suggest you stop deluding yourself in thinking that your pathetic school will make it to the top 20.

  43. I think that it is not good to post comments like this because other universities will punish us on such annoying comments… Anyway, thank you for your concern about this matter. And I appreciate what you want to say…

What is your course and year? HE HE HE! Just asking!

  44. jasper team says:

I think UP is the worst communist-infested university in the Philippines. LOL!

  45. haha….
what happen to all of you?
ang iinit naman ng mga ulo ninyo…
    Cge nga…paiinitin natin lalo!!!

    may itatanong ako?
May alam ba kayong school na nakasali sa top performing schools in the Philippines even if P85.00 lang ang tuition fee per sem? as in per sem? haha…adik ako? hindi ha?

I’m studying at MSU-Main and I am proud to say na we are competing…hindi lang sa ranking ng top schools but also sa rate ng tuition fee…85.00 lang per sem…as in per sem…!

  46. ‘Wag kang masyadong maangas at matuto kang mag-research. PLM is a state university based in the city of Manila that offers FREE tuition fee for Manila-born students. Duh?

  47. …for DEN RELOJO: cguro u have to accept the fact that ur school is not in the line with we called “known university” maybe its that ur institution just sprout somewhere else…maybe FEU must be at stake and superior than ur institution…ou di man kame nakapasok kasi nga panapanahon lang yan….PROUD TO BE TAMARAWS!!! sharper horns!! sharper minds this 2009-2009…

  48. Wow, I’m happy na nasa sa top 9 ang alma mater ko. :)
