I Hate the Philippines

09.02.2008 · Posted in Ramblings

By nature, I am a complainer and I could probably enumerate a mile-long list of reasons on why I would pick other countries over Philippines. But here are my central reasons that I chose to delve on.

1. Philippines, as a nation, is obsessed with protests and rallies. It seems like that whoever asshole will run the country, we can’t just simply support that elected asshole. We always want another People Power.

2. Philippines is one of the most corrupt nations in the world. Statistics is needless in order to expound on this, just go to your respective City Hall/Municipal Hall and all the telltale signs of corruptions are readily available.

3. Politicians in the Philippines are better off being movie actors themselves. I can’t blame them anyway since Philippine politics and showbizness are identical twins in our society.

4. Traffic in the Philippines is outrageous. This stems from lack of discipline and poor implementation of policies. Our obsession to protest and rallies also aggravates this even more.

5. Philippines is swarming with Filipinos like me who dislike the Philippines. Some are just plain hypocrites.

I think most Filipinos still adore the Philippines. Why won’t we when it is our native land? I am a bona fide Filipino and, yes, I still love this pathetic country. Yet, with roughly the same depth of passion, I dislike it for all the laudable things it used to have, which at present it no longer has.

Sounds contradictory, isn’t it? Well, much as I love this country with its abundant natural resources and admirable Filipino traits, I dislike it for what it has become. Migration is such an enticing option. However, I don’t have enough money to escape the Philippines. For the meantime, I have to resort to maximum tolerance and let blogging be my catharsis.

  1. hmmnn. What the heck. i can’t blame you but you must understand that each nation have their own version of good and bad. If you see others doing it the wrong way, don’t follow, don’t hate. instead find a way to make things better. Be the change. Hey amit kiss my ass. no one can beat india. 1 billion of your people are freakin laborers. Maybe ur too stupid to see these facts. You even hate or descriminate your own kind and still u have this silly guts to say such nonsense.

  2. i absolutely think that filipinos are one of the most intelligent, resilient, resourceful and hard-working people on the planet. ang ayoko lang, yun parang ini-impress nila ang mga foreigners, pero inaapi yun mga kapwa pilipino nila. parang lumalabas tuloy na foreigners deserve the best, tapos we filipinos are okay with the usual. yes, i do agree with you that the philippines is not a paradise. pero anong bansa ba ang paraiso? to create a utopian society, it would take hundreds of years (if you manage to achieve it at all). at kung may magagawa ka para makatulong na makapag-bring about ng change sa society natin, then do something. hindi naman kaya ng isang tao lang ang makapag-bago ng lipunan.

You’re probably just talking about Manila. Go travel, there are 81 other provinces in the Phils with less crooked ballgame and more reasons to love Philippines and Filipinos.

Its the rich filipino culture which shapes the peoples character and lifestyle…. which in turn gives us all the delights of Philippine life as well as some of the infuriating and negative aspects (as picked up by our esteemed host blogger here !). Poverty adds to the problems but the overwhelming spirit of filipino’s pushes the scales back to the absolute delights of the romantic, care-free, family-loving, god-fearing, ever-smiling, hospitable and party loving pinoy. Love of the nation is a big focus within primary education…. and large numbers of filipino’s are fiercely patriotic and do indeed love their country come what may. Oversea’s employment is the esacpe mechanism from poverty and poor prospects…..but infuses the economy with its foreign currency returns. Any big city has its crime and congestion problems but its the people of the Philippines who make it such a WONDERFUL place to be ! There are some bad-apples and too many end up in the political arena but there are many more people with a heart of gold, a smile to cherish and a warmth to melt any heart.
    Viva Filipinas ! hehe

kill yourself man! you’re such a pessimist. why don’t you see anything bright OR right or see the picture in a much larger scale? your life is a waste if you live it this way.

  7. I believe your #2 is the answer on why #1 exists. Anyways, Boracay still RULES! That and many other tourist destinations is why I still love it here. And traffic is not a sole Philippine problem. Just go to any big city in the world and you’ll see the same.

Maybe you should have re-named your blog to ‘i hate manila’ because you’re describing Manila and NOT the whole Philippines. If you get out and travel more, you’d know that.

By the way, the fil-am who won the 741M lotto prize got taxed when he got back to the US. It would have been better if he just stayed here and kept his prize in it’s entirety haha!

  8. baka manila lang nakikita mo, magikot ikot ka muna. be careful on words your are saying, If you hate the phils, bakit andito ka pa sa pinas? unless nasa ibang bansa ka na and feeling mo umangat na market value mo. Opinion lang.

  9. Please… Don’t judge your own country just because of Manila…Tour around (I mean, observe more, not only in Manila) and you’ll find more positive things than negative ones…
You know you speak Filipino and look Filipino, but please, ACT LIKE A FILIPINO.Not that I’m saying you must be that too-nationalistic-kind but you are living HERE.

  10. If it weren’t for a few close friends and relatives, I wouldn’t even think about revisiting my country. I’m lucky to have escaped the shithole it has become six bloody years ago. I was 14 then and my parents were just fucking smart that we left the country because there’s no way I could carve myself up a bright future there…go fuck yourselves, you bloody politicians who would just happily send off our countrymen only to be slaughtered in hell doing shitty jobs for richer people in richer countries. It’s just sad how we’re generally shortsighted about our future. The good, sensible ones (perhaps you’re one of them) can either just remain silent or be silenced by the majority fool who still can’t take the dirty truth about our culture and how it’s destroying ourselves. I can only love some filipinos (including myself), and I can just forget the rest ever existed. And can anyone ever endure philippine media? Please anyone sane out there should stay away from it! Or be stupid and immoral like our politicians.
