I Hate the Philippines

09.02.2008 · Posted in Ramblings

By nature, I am a complainer and I could probably enumerate a mile-long list of reasons on why I would pick other countries over Philippines. But here are my central reasons that I chose to delve on.

1. Philippines, as a nation, is obsessed with protests and rallies. It seems like that whoever asshole will run the country, we can’t just simply support that elected asshole. We always want another People Power.

2. Philippines is one of the most corrupt nations in the world. Statistics is needless in order to expound on this, just go to your respective City Hall/Municipal Hall and all the telltale signs of corruptions are readily available.

3. Politicians in the Philippines are better off being movie actors themselves. I can’t blame them anyway since Philippine politics and showbizness are identical twins in our society.

4. Traffic in the Philippines is outrageous. This stems from lack of discipline and poor implementation of policies. Our obsession to protest and rallies also aggravates this even more.

5. Philippines is swarming with Filipinos like me who dislike the Philippines. Some are just plain hypocrites.

I think most Filipinos still adore the Philippines. Why won’t we when it is our native land? I am a bona fide Filipino and, yes, I still love this pathetic country. Yet, with roughly the same depth of passion, I dislike it for all the laudable things it used to have, which at present it no longer has.

Sounds contradictory, isn’t it? Well, much as I love this country with its abundant natural resources and admirable Filipino traits, I dislike it for what it has become. Migration is such an enticing option. However, I don’t have enough money to escape the Philippines. For the meantime, I have to resort to maximum tolerance and let blogging be my catharsis.

  1. And I thought no one can beat India!!!

  2. I guess we just have our own disappointments.

  3. maybe that’s why i have quite a few filipino friends here. they who have flocked over to singapore… and some of them are doing better than us, singaporeans. heh. go wherever the grass is greener. nothing ventured, nothing gained, they say.

  4. I have the same love-hate relationship with Australia. I love how multi-cultural we are, but I hate the intolerance that goes along with it. I love that we finally have a leftish government in power, but I hate that in order to appease the right wing voters that we can’t be as radical as I’d like. I love that voting is mandatory, but I hate that so many people neglect to research on party policies and make uninformed or donkey votes. Ah, well.

  5. @Mona: I’m sure that a score of Filipinos would continue to yield to migration, as a form of escape.

  6. @Luli: I believe that such love-hate attitude towards a respective country is worldwide. We can always point out something good and something detestable about our own nation.

  7. I think its the same all over! The UK is pretty similar in many veins they just hide it better!
As soon as people become involved with power and greed the who lot goes to pot!

  8. I concur that it is prevalent. We’re looking for a Utopian society, one way or another. On a second thought, we are better off figuring out on how to make our respective countries better.

  9. Ahah… I guess I feel the same thing for Italy (that’s where I live)… I hate Italy, and I can’t see positive things about it.

  10. I thought Italy is far better than the Philippines, or it could be just a difference in perspective, I guess.

  11. Yeah, Italy is a lot different by Philippines, but I couldn’t say if it is better or worse than Philippines… There are different habits…

Btw, added u in my links…

  12. Thanks for adding me up!

  13. You are adorable!! :*

    p.s. What’s ur name? :) I am so curious!

  14. Just call me Den.

  15. @Den: I like your blog very much!! ;) it’s cool! :)

  16. Lol… Just right now I have seen that I have wrote ‘blog’ instead of ‘name’… I wanted say that I like your NAME very much! :P and your blog, too! ;)

  17. I agree w #1 and 4. I’m really pissed off when I see rallies and the like esp when they do it in Makati during business hours. Jeez! they couldn’t help the country more by protesting. Why dont they just work their asses off!

  18. @smallstar: Thank you!

  19. @hundun: I think rallies, in general, are not doing us any good.

  20. @sscbatch02: Thank you!

  21. Show-Ender says:

I think things would’ve been better if the Philippines were a culturally homogenous nation, just like Japan. Unfortunately for us, we happened to have a multitude of races, with hundreds of languages (and thousands of dialects), and completely differing cultures. And what do you get? Regionalism and discrimination. This is one of the reasons why Visayans abhor speaking in Tagalog-Filipino, or why Moros don’t consider themselves as Filipino.

Maybe a little ethnic cleansing would do the trick.

  22. I guess you need not say that you hate your Country! You hate the politicians not your country!!!

  23. @sureshrec22: I hate the politicians and the country itself.

  24. sscbatch02 says:

a hot night to you sir..
we really loved this article of yours about the philippines and i hope that we’d have a conversation someday…

  25. Glad to know it!

  26. hi Den,

what a very comment-provoking writing. keep going…i have some Filipino friends in Jakarta..they are somehow..similar to what you said in your article..not all..

    cheers,

    Reiza

  27. I live in the U.S. and I complain about various things … fantasizing a lot about what it would be like to live in another country! Perhaps we’re all just bored and need an adventure?

  28. @Mohammed Reiza: I believe other Filipinos would share the same observations that I have about the Philippines. The best thing we could do is to come up with better policies.

  29. @Fitch: I also fantasize about living in the US!

  31. @jennifer: Yeah. I agree.

Mas makabubuti nga marahil kung itutuon natin and pansin sa iba pang mga anggulo, mga positibong anggulo. Subalit, mahirap din naman na ipagwalang-bahala na lang ang mga negatibong bagay sa Pilipinas.

  32. I have many Philippino friends who are very patriotic…

    Every country has it’s flaws…

  33. Well, I can’t blame you. Sometimes being overly patriotic can be really annoying.

Btw, it’s Filipino not Philippino. :)

  34. I also love/hate my country-the U.S.A. but as far as hate, your version of the Philipines sounds like my version of Chicago which I rarely take time to like much less love. I had heard about the corruption over there from Filipino friends so know what you are saying. Keep blogging, you’re good at it.

  35. Thanks for the comment Linda!

  36. You know you talk like my husband. The way you described this country is exactly the same as he does. Reading your blog is like listening to him talking. O well I can’t argue with what you said. They are true anyway. This country of ours is like dealing with a pendulum. Our sentiments swings back and forth cause we know it is a great country compared to others but because of so many influences which started way back in the fifteen hundred a collective attitude/consciousness was formed that is highly affecting the whole set up. No one knows what to do anymore. Well love it, hate it, stay, leave so many choices to make……..bottomline is——????????????????????????

  37. @chinchin: I know there are throngs of Filipinos who would describe this country the way I do. I would concur that this country is arguably better compared to other nations but we also have our own share of disgusting things.

  38. yes, philippines is an exotic place to live in. there are really things, about this country, that we cant help but to detest. but remember, these very things make philippines a unique country. lets keep our fingers crossed for a better pinas.

    nice entries. ;)

  39. @prosetitute: Yes. We should work for a better Philippines.

  40. i might have the same sentiments with you this time…however, to be fair enought, why don’t you promote Philippines at the same time? Yesterday, I visited ocean park situated in manila bay, I got little dismayed..probabaly i have high expecations but still i encouraged Filipinos to visit the place thru my blog…unless we have the same breed of corrupt, bickering politicians, we will have the same fate years from now…

  41. I might do that “promotion thing” next time, for the sake of neutrality. It’s a love-hate sentiment and so I have to write about the other side too.

  42. it’s a love-hate thing i guess
but one can’t really run away from its shadow
so we might as well deal with it
    no hatin’

  43. Yeah, it’s a love-hate thing and I just opt to delve on the hate side.

  44. why are you posting horrid comments about the philippines..not all filipinos are what you think they are..

  45. @lot: Won’t it be realistic if we view this country from another angle? Philippines is not a paradise…
