Of Rizal

I am starting to teach Rizal, slowly taking my own toll to babble about those seemingly “useless” details of his life. I remember my college days when I used to listen to my professor’s boring narration of Rizal’s life. I mean who gives a shit if Rizal dropped a tsinelas in the river as a boy? However, I do agree that Rizal was a really unique man, with astonishing talents, and with fervent dream to rescue the Philippines from the cruelty of Spain. Rizal was arguably a great man. But, as Renato Constantino explains in his classic Veneration Without Understanding, he did not deserve to be the Philippines’s national hero. And at times, I often have my own doubts whether Rizal should be our national hero.
As I teach this on my class, I hope I could explore more of Rizal and possess a renewed realization and appreciation of his contributions.

First of all, I would like you to know that I admire you for sharing us your real perspectives on teaching Rizal. Most of the professors I’ve known teach subjects which they like and they’re comfortable with. But in your case, you just proved that even professors can hate or not like the subjects they are teaching. And I like it because you’re just being true to yourself, as well as to us. *Thumbs up for you!*
Anyways, back to the article, we both have the same issues concerning the life of Rizal. I cannot really understand what’s the need of having Rizal as one of our subjects and what’s its relation with our course. As what I’ve said in my expectations during our first meeting, I think this subject will be boring. But like what you hoped for, I also hope to get along with the subject and find it more interesting and to appreciate it more. Back in my highschool years, I hate history subjects because I really find it hard and so boring. There may have some interesting facts which make it amazing but other than that, I am not that interested to listen more. So I know nothing much of history. *hehe* (Just being true like you). All I know of Rizal is that he became our national hero because he exposed the Spaniard’s cruelty to the Filipinos thru paper and pen, in peaceful means rather than violence, and he offered himself for the freedom of his countrymen. But eventhough Rizal is our national hero, he is also a typical person like us because he also showed human acts like having more than 1 wife I guess and living in a simple life. Most of the heroes who were classified as “heroes” possess the definition of “offering one’s life for the love of country” and Rizal is one of them. That’s all I can say for this issue so far.
Well, I’m really looking forward in remembering and discovering more of Rizal’s tragic and adventurous life, other than the dates.*hehe*:)
I don’t know what’s the sense of having this subject, do we really have to know those stories of Rizal and to think that we’re not a History major and we’re far from that.
Somehow I’m also thinking (even though I’m not that interested in Rizal’s life) what’s the reason why Rizal became our national hero. Is he really that great to have that title? or maybe because he gave his life or other things he have done to our country?
Anyways I might understand well what’s behind the name Rizal through you. This subject for sure will be boring but I’m looking forward that you can make this class worthwhile…
Actually during my Highschool days i Enjoyed learning some topics that are related to Rizal or maybe its just because my teacher was a fan of Rizal and he admire him so much i can still remember when he share the story behind RIZAL’s FAMILY TREE and it shows that Rizal has a blood of a different nationalities.so that’s the time i doubt if rizal is really qualified as our national hero.
But then i think we have to memorize many DATES, EVENTS, GIRLFRIENDS and PLACES that are related to rizal (kea minsan nagiging boring na talaga e). many people admire his works that’s why they only see his positve side but rizal is also a normal person can do Negative things and so unsual just like rizal girlfriends that is one of his Cousin “Leonor Rivera”.
Anyways, I expect more Interesting facts about rizal that sir relojo would share to us.
When someone mentions the name “Rizal”, what ideas spring into our minds?A man, with a ridiculous hair & a funny mustache? The Philippine’s national hero?A writer?A doctor?A man who was persecuted?A womanizer?
All of these can be applied to Rizal, and yet, it doesn’t capture HIM, ALL OF HIM…His essence, his ideas, his personality, his LIFE…
To tell you the truth, i had never looked up to him. For me, he’s unworthy to be called our national hero. For me, he is merely a writer who lived long ago & was killed because of it. For me, the fact that he published his works, outside of the country, away form the grasps of the people whom he provokes is a sign of cowardice.
Some people out there who looks up to him may call me foolish, but I’m merely expressing my insights & thoughts.
Jose Rizal is undoubtedly a great man. He had achieved a superior education, put it into good use & helped people. But these achievements aren’t enough to make him our national hero. Yes, he was killed because of saying things that aren’t supposed to be said. Yes, because of him, the wheels of the revolution was put into motion. But is that ENOUGH? What are the other things that our ancestors considered when they made him our national hero? Was he REALLY worthy, taking his faults in consideration?
We all know that no one is perfect, not me or you or anyone else. But Dr.Jose Rizal represents our country, & his faults……..Well,lets just say, they kind of “taints” things for us. The Rizal Street in Paris, France is a good example. It is where DJR stayed at when he was in Paris. Yes, they named the street after him, but what does that street contain? Bars, cabarets. It is known as the Red District of Paris; because of the womanizing tendencies of DJR, the French named a street of clubs after him. Horrible, isn’t it? Shameful, even…
I wonder if Filipinos are proud of DJR? I wonder if everyone knows him?I wonder if they appreciate the things that he have done more than I do?I wonder….
I hope to learn the answers to the questions that are plaguing my mind. I hope “I’ll see the light” as some might say…I hope to know more than what some history books might give.
This is my chance. Not only mine, but this is OUR chance. To be ENLIGHTENED, not FOOLED.To know the TRUTH,not some HEARSAY.And to be PROUD,not to be ASHAMED.
From the first time I’ve heard of Dr. Jose Rizal’s name, he was addressed as a genius, talented, one of a kind, a man very near to perfection. Probably, our teachers want us to recognize Rizal in this manner beacuse he is our National hero.
In my own point of view, or probably you as well; believe that no matter how good a person is, he or she still have a dark side. I wonder what Jose Rizal’s is. When I was in first year College, I heard that Jose Rizal is “play boy” at his time. I want to know the other side of Rizal’s sotry.
Moreover, I may appreciate him more as a National hero if I will be able to know both sides of his stories.
***Hope you can provide us with the chismis about Rizal, sir =). May we all enjoy this class Thanks very much po.
Hmmm.. Hmmm.. DR. JOSE P. RIZAL…
Most of us would probably say that this is one of the most BORING subject ever… But i guess, there’s a reason behind why this subject is included in Nursing curriculum..
First of all, Rizal is the Philippines National Hero. As a Filipino, we need to study and know the importance of his works and contributions to the Filipino people, especially during the times of other country’s cruelty. Jose Rizal is Jose Rizal. No one can ever replace him and no one can be equaled with what he has done and achieved for the country. Even those people who never go to school would know who he is even by name. Honestly speaking, even though his life was thought during our high school years, I still don’t know a lot of things about him. We need to hear and see the real Jose Rizal.. (either positive or negative)
This may seem nothing to us, but i know, at the end of this course, we will realize how grateful we are having Dr. Jose Rizal as our National Hero…
****_____****
Rizal subject keeps me boring when i in highschool years special his famous two novels Noli me tangere and the El filibusterismo but about rizal life keeps me interested from his childhood to how he became our national heroes. my teacher in highschool days teach all praises about the life and achievements of Rizal thats why i think of him a perfect person but we only know him from what the books have told us and not of his true character.
So i expect the subject that can be easily understand, more true stories about Jose Rizal and secrets behind his famous hero. And also enjoy this subject for our last sem. —— \m/(^.^)\m/
First and foremost, ang lalalim ng terms.critically speaking that’s the way how mature professional wrote his insights.
Somebody find the subject absurd and has a bit of boredom there in, but a s far as the subject is concerned, we are obligate to know every detail of his existence and exhibitions during his era, however, we should engulf ourselves into it.
Sana po magbigay ang prof. ng mga hints or facts rather, about rizal’s deeds. that we can apply to our field through interventions and managements that we are going to render to our prioritized patients. It is just because, I heard that rizal once became a doctor,so, there are possibilities that through Him, we can gain knowledge, tips and important information that can help us a lot.
Doing all of that, will only prove that rizal is not a boring narration, but rather an interesting and hilarious subject; and not seemingly useless but totally worth listening for.
“carry” po ba?
When I was about an elementary student, I often heard the name Rizal his books and most specially his works and from then on, it made me believe that Dr. Jose Protacio Rizal is indeed our National Hero.
On the other hand, i believe that Rizal was kind, brave, intelligent, a genius one and maybe a perfect one, a great writer.
Yes, he is a great writer but it made me confuse when he wrote a spanish novel, it reminds me on his sayings..”ang hindi magmahal sa sariling wika ay higit pa sa mabaho at malansang isda” how come that he wrote a novel that cause a contradiction on his sayings?
Many questions that are still playing in my mind, and i hope that studying Rizal in this semester can answer those questions.
Dr. Jose Rizal , our national hero, as i know has a wonderful life. But, i only knew limited knowledge about him like his writings like “Noli Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo” which i studied in my high school days.
This writings really target the kind of government by the time of Spaniards and this shows how intelligent and how great the mind of Dr. Jose Rizal which i admire the most.
But as i said, i only knew limited knowledge about him so maybe sir you could help me to gain new information about the life of our national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal.
” Dr. Jose Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realondo ”
Since I first knew of Rizal in our high school subject. I have had a question. Why is Rizal the National Hero, not Aguinaldo, nor Bonifacio? Rizal did little except writing two novels. Why? While listening to my teacher , I thought I had an answer. Historically, his books and his death triggered the revolution activities. But true reason is, I suppose, that Rizal had a universal view on humanity and freedom. I was impressed by the following two lines: 1) In a Madrid pub, he says “Unless we first learn self-respect, we will not be respected by any other peoples.” 2) After having death sentence, his barrister says he is ashamed as a Spanish. Rizal says, “No, we are the same human beings.”
He was not a perfect man, nor his ideas. But he left something everlasting, that Filipinos can be proud of.
Capital B.O.R.I.N.G.
That’s the six-letters that reminds me when it comes to Rizal’s life. The generation nowadays is not more interested in his life, why? If our country is really serious in publishing his life and his famous works as a Filipino, they must put it on the big screen,or in commercials as well. But including it in the nursing curriculum? WTF!!
I know a little bit about his excellence, he is our national hero, got 2 famous writtings. The Noli Me Tangere and El filibusterismo (which is very good). But
I was disappointed because those two novels were originally written in Spanish and Latin. Is this a good qualification to become a national hero? Where is our national heart?
Ok,lets accept the fact that he is good in writing, he doesn’t need to engage with swords, high calibrated guns. Why? Because he is well educated.
I vote Pacquiao as our new National hero. rawr! ^_^
So much for that.
as a normal student wen i heard the subject rizal,it keeps me bored, becoz why we study rizal?we know that he is our national hero he contributes a lot in our country.i am not against rizal, but is it true that he contributes a lot in our country?we people are so exaggerated for describing an individual(pasalin salin n lng kc).we dont know which is true.i only knew limited knowledge about him, rizal is also a human being and i know as a man he is not perfect and he dont have a supa power to do anything. ^^
José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda was a Filipino polymath, nationalist and the most prominent advocate for reforms in the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era. He is considered the Philippines’ national hero and the anniversary of Rizal’s death is commemorated as a Philippine holiday called Rizal Day. He is really the very well known as the most genius national hero in the country, but setting aside his all achievements and good deeds done in the country because all I ever heard about him is all good and positive and irrefutable. But what about the not so good things he done? Should we also consider it? Because no human being lived in this world is perfect. Even this doubtful thoughts of mine enter in my brain, still I idolized him for being courageous and sacrifice his life for our nation… hope Mr. Dennis Relojo can clarify all this questions and give us the information we need…
i agree with your article sir.
Honestly speaking, im not intersted about Rizal. when i heard his name it doesnt aroused my attention at all. carry lang! knowing that one of our subjects is to tackle about him, naisip ko kagad boring yun. promise! i know Rizal as our national hero. an intellegent and brave man. actually, parang di applicable yung brave for him. because knowing how he fought against the spaniards using his pen is not called as bravery, hindi rin naman cowardness! i dont know how to call it but astig siya diba! through his way of defending his country and countrymen he showed us how smart he is.
since grade school kilala ko na sya. gasgas na nga name nya sa tenga ko e! but i admit i only know a little of him. the knowledge and information that i knew about him is not reasonable for me to say that he is boring. but i cant help it. sorry! im just being honest.
i just hope through this subject, it will widen my knowledge about him. i am widely open for new learnings about Dr. Jose P. Rizal not only as our national hero but also as a Filipino. i want also to enlighten my mind on all of the issues and questions arising about his title as our national hero. i want to know if he really deserved to be called as the Philippine National Hero.
Booooring….. thats the first word that comes on my mind when i heard Rizal as one of our subject….
i really don’t know why we need to have Rizal as one of our subject… because as far as i know there’s no relation between Rizal and nursing, but somehow i am also thinking whats the relation nga ba?…nag nursing din ba xa?…kung nag nursing xa… eh di we also have the chance to be a hero also…?(hehe nangarap.. pakamatay muna ko…)
Dr. Jose Rizal…… hmmmmmm….. our national hero or lets say HERO? i put question mark simply because i dont know why he became a hero…whats his difference satin para tawagin xang hero…
honesty speaking i don’t want to take this subject but i have to…hindi ako makakagraduate pag hindi ko ti-nake toh.. but even tough i dont want to take this subject.. somehow pumapasok din sa isip ko ung mga simpleng tanong which is i know na sa Rizal subject ko lang malalaman… like madami din ba xang bad things na ginawa?… gumawa din ba xa ng kabalastugan? ilang babae naba ang dumaan sa kanya.. nagtatapon din ba xa nang basura sa ilog(hehe)… and bakit kailangan niyang mamatay para matawag na bayani…..?
So sir. relojo? go for it…. you can do it….hehehe..(.;_;.)…
José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda, the complete name of our national hero during Spanish era. A brave man who fight the independent need of Filipino people during their colonization in our country. A man use his talent on writing to fight against the other kind of human being want to take us under their power.
Rizal as a subject on college student like nursing student’s help to understand the life of Dr. J.P. Rizal behind his famous Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. A student like us don’t give more attention to study history. Now give us a oppurtunity to know his much more.
Isn’t it true that he is a woman lover, that give his a image that he is one of the Filipino playboys? What is his family background? Does his parents are good while raising him up?
A background that help Filipino or even not a Filipino to know this man. The man that have been choosen to be our national hero. While discussing him through this subject. A big question to all may be answer if he deserve to be on his position to be national hero.
Lets find out
I’ve been hearing about “Rizal” since I was Grade 2(I guess..) and it always fill my head with questions because I just often hear his name without having any knowledge who he really was, besides that he is our national hero. Fortunately, whenever our teacher asked us about to choose a hero and explain why, of course I always picked him, hence, it made me knew him little by little.
Luckily, when I was in highschool (particularly in 3rd year) I was able to know him better because of his works like Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. These were the things that was kept in my head. First, he used his pen ( I don’t know if it was a pen literally) and his indescribable mind in helping our fellow Filipinos in building the “Nationalism” in their hearts. That’s one of the reason why we Filipinos, by the time of Spaniards, seek for freedom .Maybe some say that reading his writings caused boredom and has no sense at all. But I do believe that it is within the reader on how he/she would comprehend or absorbed the message Rizal was writing about.
For me, he is a great man for opening our blind eyes of our race and for making our deaf ears be able to hear the truth we have waited for so long.
But still, questions are still bugging my mind if his writings are worth enough to call him a National Hero, which was also the cause why he was sentenced to death. He has big contributions why we are living “freely” and having the rights in our own land.
I’m still waiting for more details about him that would satisfy the confusion I’m having right now…
Would you mind if I say “No Comment”. First thing, who would mind reading all these comments except for the professor who made this possible and to those who tries to copy (hehe!peace.) On contrary, this subject about the life of Rizal is not new in me, I’ve graduated in highschool because of Rizal, so thanks to him. During those time, I am satisfied and contented in Jose Rizal as our National Hero because of his talents in writing for our freedom and his outstanding personality. The “tsinelas” thing is really weird and full of admiration, who will thought of giving up the other pair of slipper especially for a young kid, if that happens to me I will cry because surely my mom will get mad at me.
Last year, when I took up history, our professor shares us diffrenet views and controversies on Dr. Jose Rizal. Like, women whose been part if his life, his natural playboy image, why he uses pen instead of gun for fighting for what he believed in. And the purpose in studying abroad, was really for our country?or just for luxury? Really different from what Zaide wrote.
Does it affect my own views about Rizal? In a way, because I let my thoughts be guarded on a single book without realizing that Dr. Jose Rizal inspite of being a Hero is still God’s creation, a human who commits thousands of mistakes.
At present, I want to be open on the different sides of the story of Rizal. And learn from him more. Do you mind my “no comment” thing?? Thanks sir…
We cannot deny the fact that Rizal’s works and deeds became one of the keys that freed the Filipinos from the captivity of the Spaniards that made us to experience freedom. but as you have said, mr. relojo, Rizal is just human. and his humanity, just like us did not except him from commiting mistakes.
Just like others, I grew up knowing that HE is the national hero without really knowing what is the gauge and standard used for him to be chosen. I have read his work only when i was in highschool because it is dictated to do so but soon as i lift the pages of my books I appreciated reading Noli me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. Looking deep within these novels are messages that can’t be grasp if we will not allow ourselves to understand what is written. but for now, studying about him is quite unusual. We really don’t understand what is the essence of including Rizal in the Nursing curriculum. Our generation tends to get bored on the things that we think that we can’t benefit of. At this point of time, I think we will study about him not because we want to but because we are forced to. I know that you will not let that happen.
But what is important IS, the man of today benefit from what he have done, along with the other heroes. And because of that, they deserve due respect and honor.
For me, we don’t have the right to tell craps about him eventhough some of us don’t agree for him as a national hero because WE can’t even call ourselves GOOD, GREAT, BETTER, HERO. I hope, when he died, he still knew that he can’t please everybody hehe
Be inspired because of others, and try to at least do something to inspired others too..
thank you sir, and I hope that this class and this subject will improve our point of view not only on Rizal but also on ourselves as well *wink*
Dr. Jose Rizal….well as what I could say wholly, he’s a very complex icon to filipino’s everywhere but studying about his life and his life’s works and his nobility for being our national hero is more of a tedious activity than usual and in the contrary a bit inviting.
Some of the people admire him as if it feels like he’s one invincible human being and doesn’t have flaws even a bit on his character. but that invites my curious mind to find something more unusual about our national hero. I mean surely am not a hypocrite not to admit that I hate studying the life of rizal because he’s too much noble (and we’re already bored of too many noble peoples in our past right?), but for the fact that you’d be mysteriously guessing why on earth of all the heroes in the Philippines he would be the one to be known as national hero and to ever think that, is he really that noble and a decent person we all grew up to know? That even for his childhood years he would be that ready-to-lend-a-hand-person or maybe a giving person for other’s sake like in an anecdote of him called the “tsinelas”, to throw his other tsinelas, to maybe help someone those in need of it. And for the dark side of him, do those intrigues for him to be called a womanizer true?
I admire him for his nobility but let’s face the fact that we’re all humans and we do humane and worldly things to equal life. I just want to look into a deep personality of him that made him human, that has flaws, more excitement and more intriguing and divulging facts about him that might not have been unacceptable and defy his nominations as our national hero.
Just hope that you open our minds sir to see and unveil the true rizal and by which still point some of the views and perception on the other side of him that make him standout and be magnificent to be well renowned as a national hero because of the good and brilliant things he had done….=)
The first thing that comes into my mind every time i heard of a name Rizal is that he is a Hero. And when we say Rizal subject I already know its kinda boring. But despite of having this thought i have this in my mind that Rizal subject will let us learn a lot of lesson. He is still human, not perfect like us. And I believe that all of us could be Rizal too even in simple ways. Rizal may have his failures too, but why then he became a hero? simply because with all of those weaknesses he had he try to make it a point that he did something good for the country.
in this article, i am eager to know a lot more about Rizal not just the good and best things about him as what always happen its so super human. i want also to know his leaks because he’s a human not a God that makes him perfect. I hope in this subject i will learn lot about Rizal.
How can we label a person as a hero? I guess there are certain criterias for you to be called a hero. And this criterias may vary. Some may include saving someone’s life, receiving achievement on your chosen field (just like Manny Pacquiao) and fighting for freedom of your country and fellowmen. I think the last that was mention is where Jose Rizal falls.
This man is well-known because of his intelligence and courage during the Spaniard times and been in the book where his life and works were discussed. And coming from our professor in Rizal, different authors of books related to Rizal have different points of view and opinions regarding this man.
Admittedly, I know less about Jose Rizal aside from the basic facts about him. Few of them was that he wrote the two famous books-Noli Me tangere and El Fili, he was imprisoned and shot in Bagumbayan and that he was multilingual since he speak in different languages which I admire. Aside from those, I cannot tell the real story beyond everything who Rizal really is.
After taking this subject, maybe I will have a different perception and accurate answers on who Rizal in a bold manner and not just only the famous Rizal we all knew.
I assume that our professor and the class will be enlighten regarding in this subject after all the discussions we will do.
comment
Jose Rizal? Our national Hero??? Uhmm
I think everyone of us have ability to be a hero in our own way..
We have our own character that I think we can call a hero..
pero di naten kailangan mamatay just to say that we are hero db?!!!
Jose Rizal is known about his work in his time the el felibustarismo and noli me tangere and also the strength that he shown to the Filipino people when he fights to the Spaniards through letters. These are the thing that I remember if I heard his name. A national hero who gives and dedicate her life for his countrymen..
uhmm one thing that is questionable for me? tsinelas? is it part of becoming a national hero!!! i don’t think so… but is it real or just nothing. pinagkatuwaan lang c rizal.. this is the 1st time i heard panget about rizal life because nong nasa highschool p q puro good things kasi nga db national hero…
i hope this subject will help us to understand more thing about Rizal real story
My thoughts and doubts about Jose Rizal just started when i was in 3rd yr. college in our subject Philippine history because our professor in that subject told us about some points about jose Rizal and told us that we will tackle all about him in a Rizal subject in 4th yr. Because of some issues that our professor presented us,I started to make think what other side of him or his traits tht most of us do not know.
Some issues like if Rizal resides near in a Casa when he was studying on Europe and a argue about if really Jose Rizal deserves to be our National hero despite Andres Bonifacio. and i wanna know if Jose Rizal girlfriends is equal to his many writings and the way that Jose Rizal prepares to wear a long coat despite of our Barong Tagalog which is our National cloth. Aside from such negative feedbacks from Jose Rizal, I wanna know also about his more contributions in our country and what makes him qualified to be our National hero.
Now, hopefully my thought and doubts would be clear and find the answers to my questions about our National hero.
As a graduating student, I was excited to see what’s installed for us this last semester. Upon looking, I seem to stop at words, “RIZAL” (with all the bold letters!) Honestly, I am not really into dates and places that much. Ever since I was young, I consider studying history as such a boring one and for sometimes, a burden. It is because I have to stay up late at night and go over and over it just to memorize when they were born, died and the likes)
It is a common and scratched question to ask why there is a need to study the past when nothing could be done to undo it? I remember my old teacher in history back in my elementary days who said, “Ang hindi lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makakarating sa paroroonan.” Sounds familiar right? but I admit, it does makes sense.
I grew up studying in a Catholic school and as always nuns and saints are just one of the typical views. As a back track, I remember Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face (I hope I remembered it correctly!) She is a ‘common’. Typical lady who prays and stuffs, with that became a saint at the age of 24.
Connection with Rizal? Nothing much actually besides that they started and died young, dones things away from the limelight…but nevertheless, the states definitely made a difference…
Love in any way, proves itself by deeds. In his case, the question is how he’s going to show his love when great deeds were forbidden him. With all the negativism found everywhere then, the only way he can prove his love is by scattering words and insights, these and more are every little sacrifice, every glance and word, and the doing are the least actions for his love which proved that it does not need to become bloody and vicious to become victorious…
Hence, Rizal has paved the ways through his writings which started the flame in every Filipino hearts then. With his motivation, the next things are history.(I guess I consider him as the right choice to become our National Hero!)
Well, I guess, I’ve said too much! (peace for my clustered thoughts!)
I’ve read a book before about life of Rizal.
Peace
When I was in high school we discuss the book written by Dr. Jose P. Rizal the Noli Me Tanggere at EL Filibusterismo. And by that time di ko rin alam kung bakit sya naging bayani ng bansa natin?
Sometimes it makes me wonder if Rizal should be our national hero. There too many issues attach to him when he was living in his time. Issues that are not too good for a national hero. In my opinion, a national hero should have qualities that can never be challenged by any other person, issues that will never question his status as the national hero.
I hope if I take this subject I would know why Rizal was named as the national hero, and also I think that if we take this subject we will be inspired to be a nationalist, to love our country and to dedicate ourselves to public service when we become a Registered Nurse!
What do we mean by National Hero? If we define a hero as one who overcomes challenges that would break other people and did it with class and dignity, I would really go for Jose Rizal. Rizal is mostly admired by Filipinos for his love of country and his works against the spaniards and in serving people.
When I was in Highschool I became a big fan of Rizal because. I was amazed about his works specially the Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.Rizal truly was a person for his countrymen, he truly was a patriot and nationalistic for he never wanted to see his fellow countrymen being oppressed and being exploited.
He truly was a man of action, he did not only looked over the people nor just tell people what to do, he helped them in their everyday work. Rizal is our hero, our inspiration, our lesson of the past that we should be a man for our country. Rizal was intelligent and yet very humble. Was it coincidence, was it dedicated to Rizal, or is this an indication that Rizal was born to be our hero?
I’am curious if what i heard about rizal is true, he is only about 4’11 or 5 ft in height. well I don’t know how true is that. haha. Well of course Dr. Jose Protacio Rizal is well known for being our national hero. He was born in Calamba, laguna on June 19, 1861. His parents are Francisco Mercado and Teodora Alonzo. Her mother serves as his fisrt teacher at home, then he continue studying in Binan, laguna. He finished his Bachelor in Science at Ateneo De Manila on March 23, 1876. In 1877 He continued studying at University of Sto. Tomas and Unibersidad Central de Madrid until he finished Medicine and Philosophy simultaneously in the year 1885.
He also wrote novels, two of his most popular work is the ” NOLI ME TANGERE” and the “EL FILIBUS TERISMO”. which shows how the spaniards abuse the filipinos.
December 26,1896 when he was sentenced to death because of suspicion that he led the rebellion against the spaniards. Before his time comes, he still wrote a novel for the future generations the ” MI ULTIMO ADIOS” ( The last farewell) which calls the attention of the said generation to love our country.
Honestly i got bored of this things about rizal, i want to know something new about him, lets say I want to know his other personality. of course each and everyone of us has our own darksides. I don’t beleive that he is a pure respected person, because there is no one ever existed in this world perfectly except God.
Rizal… hmMm… the last time i study about Rizal is when i was in high school, but we didn’t actually focus about Rizal since the subject is about his writings “Nolo Me Tangere” and “El Filibusterismo”.
I knew few things about Rizal, some good characteristics like the tsinelas that he drop, treating the poor for free and being a good son. But if there’s a good characteristics, there is also bad things about him, like having many girlfriends, and the issue of hurting some of his girlfriend.
But about the issue of being the national hero, actually i don’t know what are the characteristics to be called a hero. But for me, we have nothing to do to be able to change who will be our National Hero even if we want. And about criticizing of some people about Rizal, as a catholic student i can say that we are not God that can’t commit mistakes in during our time here on earth.
And before i end my comment, i must say that all of us can be a hero in little or in big ways, i doesn’t matter what you are in the past but more important is what you are now and you continue to do what is right in the eye of God and in the eye of the people…ü
“We do not have to become heroes overnight. Just a step at a time, meeting each thing that comes up… discovering we have the strength to stare it down…”
“RIZAL”
I don’t know about him,all I know is that he is our National hero. as to define who is he. I do agree to what you’ve said to your article. Im thinking while you where discussing the last meeting some stories and issues with regards to our subject, to what is the use of RIZAL in my daily life. What do we need to know and learn about him. But it is somewhat interesting. Because when I was in high school, its not RIZAL but we’re thinking that CRISOSTOMO there is RIZAL, and he’s story is interesting.
I’ve got no idea why RIZAL became the national hero. Because for me, there no use if I know more about him. But if needed, maybe, I can understand some issues and stories about him. Now, with you,as our professor, I think, I can realize and understand RIZAL his use in social and application to my life.
As you we’re sharing your experiences with us, I found this subject interesting and I think I can learn more and understand well. Only if you emphasize to us what’s the real use and how we can understand it easy( honestly before, I hate this kind of subject. Im thinking that my mind will not work well to think and analyze, but as days passed, and I met you, whom I found that with you, I can understand well, I love to attend and listen to you every meeting. and now, im loving it. also, as what i’ve loved my course.
while I’m working for this assignment, my mind works very fast. Thinking of what goes next, of what RIZAL can help me and whats my next learning with you. Of what will gonna happen tomorrow. of what will I learn
i hope that at the end of the semester, I will have lots of ideas and learnings about RIZAL,stories and contradicting issues about him. (whoaw! i hope I can understand well)
I will love this subject, RIZAL, with you and my classmate..

I don’t really agree that Jose Rizal is our national hero. I have also some questions that my history teacher during my highschool days didnt answer yet and maybe this time Rizal subject can further help me on some of my douths about him being our “Pambansang bayani” .
I remember when one of my friends relative commented about Rizal, She said ( Yan si Rizal? hindi ko alam kung bakit naging bayani yan, nabasa ko nga dun sa isang libro na madami ding kalokohan yan ehh..) well, he is only a human being that has weakness like everyone of us and his uniqueness to others maybe made him a hero, but I don’t really consider him as a hero, because as far as i know his dids didnt fit him to be a some kind of a “Bayani”.
i can consider him as a cowardly man fighting only with his writings while there are some other heroes that give their best to protect our beloved nation with his bloody hands from all enemies we had.
Well, we have a different opinion, and maybe as far as i know i definitely didnt agree with him as a true HERO.
“Manny Pacquiao” now that’s a national hero for the Philipines. LOL
