Words of the Day

If what sets us humans apart from other animals is our ability to use language, then I would say that having an extensive vocabulary certainly sets one man apart from another. Possessing an insufficient vocabulary could relatively limit one socially and professionally. Increasing our vocabulary is not an easy task, but it is well worth the effort.

Following are the words I have learned today; and you may also include them into your own stock.

1. kowtow: to act in an obsequious manner; show servile deference.
2. crass: without refinement, delicacy, or sensitivity; gross; obtuse; stupid.
3. nincompoop: a fool or simpleton.
4. upshot: the final issue, the conclusion, or the result.
5. opulent: wealthy, rich, or affluent.
6. nullify: to render or declare legally void or inoperative.
7. spendthrift: a person who spends possessions or money extravagantly or wastefully; prodigal.
8. joust: to contend, compete, or struggle.
9. equanimity: mental or emotional stability or composure, esp. under tension or strain; calmness; equilibrium.
10. citadel: any strongly fortified place; stronghold.
