POD2B: John Nash Questions
POD2B,
We’ve reached the end of this week with a collective sigh of relief — Our class is still intact!
So, let’s get to business:
Here’s are the Discussion Questions for the film you’ve just seen.
NOTE: Submission is on the 26th.

1. In reference to the scene in which Nash has been given some form of shock therapy: If it works, is such therapy justifiable, in spite of the apparent violence of the procedure? One would assume that such a procedure could only be ethical if the patient gives informed consent. But to what extent could someone in Nash’s position give genuine informed consent? Under what conditions are we ever right in treating persons without their consent? Who decides?
2. Cite instances on the film where introspection was used by John Nash. Do you think that introspection is an effective way to treat a serious medical condition such as schizophrenia? Expound.
3. There is a tendency for affected persons to stop taking their medication as soon as they get better, even in the face of professional advice not to do so. How far should we go to persuade or compel affected persons to continue treatment? Do patients have a responsibility to themselves to seek out treatment? Whose interests need to be consulted in making this decision? Who, in the end, is responsible? Who decides?
4. Given the choices Nash had for dealing with his condition (either taking drugs with horrible side effects, or fighting with himself to ignore the voices), do you think he made the right choice? What would you choose to do in that situation? (Do you think you could learn to suppress the voices, and how?)
5. What makes mental health a concern for all, not just individual patients?
